Dennis Overby Obituary

May 6th, 1941 - March 11th, 2024

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dennis Raymond Overby, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Dennis departed peacefully at his home at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and cherished memories.

Born in Chetek, Wisconsin, Dennis was a distinguished figure in both athletics and education. A standout athlete at Chetek High School, he excelled in basketball, baseball, and track. However, it was his exceptional talent on the baseball field that garnered widespread acclaim. Blessed with unparalleled pitching prowess, Dennis threw an astounding 11 no-hitters during his high school career. In his senior year alone, he tossed three no-hitters and two perfect games while finishing 9-0 with an ERA of 0.00. His remarkable achievements left an indelible mark on Chetek's sporting legacy.

Dennis' talent was quickly recognized by professional scouts, leading to his signing with the Milwaukee Braves after his high school graduation in the summer of 1959. Despite his promising start in the world of professional baseball, shoulder injuries prematurely curtailed his career, redirecting his path towards education and coaching.

Returning to his hometown of Chetek, Denny embarked on a distinguished 30-year career as a high school guidance counselor, baseball, and basketball coach. During his three decades of coaching, he amassed over 300 wins in both baseball and basketball. In 2003, his contributions to the sporting community were officially recognized with his induction into the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Beyond his achievements in education, coaching, and athletics, Denny was known for his unwavering dedication to the youth of Chetek. He served many years as the city's recreation director, where he spearheaded numerous recreational initiatives, providing opportunities for kids of all ages to engage in various sports, fostering a vibrant and active community.

In recognition of his dedication to the community at large, Chetek's city field was officially christened "Denny Overby Field" in 2009, a testament to his lasting legacy and profound impact on the community.

In Denny’s free time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, with a deep passion for the outdoors. Whether he was peacefully casting a line in the tranquil waters of a nearby lake or skillfully tracking game through the lush forests of the Blue Hills, Dennis found solace and joy in the wilderness. His love for hunting and fishing not only provided him with personal fulfillment but also served as a means of fostering strong bonds with family and friends. Legend has it that Denny actually laid eyes upon “Da Turdy Point Buck” up in them thar hills on a cold winter’s night after leaving the Ponda, a tale that only adds to the lore of Dennis Raymond Overby.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Roberta (Bobbette) Overby; his sons, Steve Overby of Chetek, WI, and Brian Overby of Lake Wylie, NC; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Donna) Overby of Pine City, MN, Curt (Yvonne) Overby of East Holden, ME, and Gordy (Cheryl) Overby of Cumberland, WI; his brother-in-law, Jack Doyle of Rice Lake, WI; his nieces, Angela Overby and Colleen Kinziger; his nephew, Mike Doyle; his great-nephew, Joe Kinziger; his great-niece, Alicia Kinziger, and his grandson, Wyatt Overby.
