Obituary

Lucy Gertrude Hurtis, age 100, went to meet her heavenly father on July 17, 2026, after a life well lived, grounded in faith and family. Lucy was born on March 18, 1926, on the family farm in Rusk township, to Stella and George Mieloszyk. Lucy was the 6th of 8 children, all proud members of the greatest generation.

On May 23, 1945, she married Elmer Hurtis and began a loving journey that started on the Hurtis family farm east of Chetek. In 1951, they packed up the family and moved to New Richmond where they eventually started a family business, Hurtis Implement, which continued until 1976. Throughout that time, Lucy assisted Elmer in all his various business adventures, providing bookkeeping support, clerical services and an extra pair of hands for whatever was required. More importantly, Lucy was the bedrock of the family, commanding the home. She loved to bake and cook. She kept the children on the straight and narrow, managing school activities, providing behavioral guidance, and ensuring that all attended weekly mass. Her Catholic faith was fundamental to the life she lived and was ingrained in her family.

She was an active member of the Alter Society at Immaculate Conception church in New Richmond, and later, the Women’s Group at St Boniface in Chetek. In 1983, Lucy and Elmer moved back to the Chetek area and built a retirement home on the edge of the Hurtis Family farm. There, they enjoyed the fruits of their life’s labor, gardening, canning, feeding the orioles, cardinals and humming birds, listening to the Brewers on the radio, helping their children and grandchildren and relishing their own company. After Elmer’s passing in 1999, Lucy continued to reside at that home until hospice services were required in April of 2025.

The strength of her upbringing was exemplified in Lucy’s fierce independence in her later years; continuing to cook, bake and manage her own affairs. Many a squirrel or raccoon succumbed to her swift justice for violating the sanctity of her bird feeders or garden. Although she was forced to give up driving 4 years ago with her deteriorating eyesight, she continued to heat her home with wood until she was admitted into hospice care.

Lucy is proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer, parents, George and Stella Mieloszyk, sisters Florence Wodein, Rose Hoiby, Betty Sindelar, Edna Matson and brothers Ed (Mieloszyk) Miller, Ted Mieloszyk and Gene (Mieloszyk) Miller. She is survived by her children, Dennis (Rita) Hurtis Glenwood City, WI, Sharon (Bill) Holland New Richmond, WI, Beth (Kevin) DeRosier Eau Claire, WI, George (Karen) Hurtis New Auburn, WI, and Paul (Janell) Hurtis, Mackinaw, Il. She is also survived by, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

The visitation will take place on Monday, July 27th, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with a memorial mass to follow at St. Boniface Catholic Church, officiated by Father Maria Vallabhaneni. The family would like to invite everyone to Lucy’s final resting place at Lakeview Cemetery in Chetek, WI. Following the conclusion of the graveside service, there will be fellowship and a luncheon at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Boniface Catholic Church.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jen D. of Marshfield Clinic Hospice, and to the wonderful staff at Meadow Brook Nursing Home in Chetek for their exceptional care and compassion.
