Obituary

Jean Alice (Angelow) Harriman, 89, went to meet her Lord on Friday, August 14 at Meadowbrook in Chetek. WI. She was born on Aug 13, 1937, in Ashland WI to Don and Alice Angelow. She was the first born of seven children. She grew up near Duluth, MN until she was 15 then moved back to Cable, WI.

On Dec 27, 1955, Jean married Harley Harriman. They moved to Glendale AZ and lived on Luke Air Force Base. While there, Rose Marie and then twins Cindy and Chuck were born. Harley and Jean moved back to Hayward in 1959 where Tom and then Mary Ann were born. In the 1960s they all moved to Chetek WI and added Brett to the family. Jean and Harley lived the rest of their lives in Chetek.

They lived in a farmhouse three miles north of town. Jean loved working in her large garden, canning in the fall, and cooking all year for family and friends. She was known for her hospitality and friendship. Jean was famous for her baked beans, apple pies, and lemon meringue pie. Neighborhood parties took place all year long.

As the kids grew up, Jean was a Girl Scout Leader for 11 years, a 4-H sewing teacher, and led many other activities. Her heart was with the Chetek Lutheran Church where she had many friends, was a member of the choir for 50 years, taught Sunday school, sewed quilts for graduates, served on church committees, was a member of Tabitha Circle, and volunteered wherever she was needed. She was also a faithful member of her Sunday night bible study.

Jean joined her husband Harley as a cross-country semi truck driver for 17 years and she received safe driving awards each year. Together they drove all around the United States visiting family and friends.

In 1978, Jean and Harley drove to Boyne Falls Michigan to pick up the load of wooden logs which the family then built into a beautiful White Cedar Log home on the top of a small hill south of Chetek. Flower gardens were everywhere around the house. In 1998, Harley and Jean took their dream trip to Hawaii with Jim and Donna Lenbom. She had the opportunity to travel in 2007 to her ancestor's homeland Harjstad Norway. She also visited Chuck and Karla in Yokohama Japan and Shanghai China.

Jean moved to Meadowbrook eight years ago where she was loved and regarded as the “social butterfly”. Jean kept her hands and mind busy writing her life story, knitting countless newborn baby hats for local hospital nurseries

Jean was very handy and created all kinds of handmade clothes over the years. She made bridesmaid & wedding dresses, linen heirloom baptism gowns with Norwegian Hardanger edging for each of her five children. Jean knit sweaters, socks, hats, slippers, and mittens for each of her children, grandchildren, then great grandchildren. She also made every grandchild a special log cabin quilt. Each of her handmade items included a tag “Made With Love By Grandma Jean”

Jean was a proud member of the Sons of Norway for years. She learned the art of Norwegian Hardanger Embroidery at an expert level and earned awards for her work.

Jean was Preceded in Death by her husband, Harley Harriman, son, Tom Harriman, mother and father, Sister, Sandy Henriksen, and Sister, Juli Hand.

Jean is survived by her children RoseMarie (Ed) DuBose, Cindy Harriman, Charles (Karla) Harriman, MaryAnn Harriman, and Brett (Dina) Harriman. Jean’s siblings Donna Henriksen, Donald (Meg) Angelow, Jerry Angelow, Sheri Angelow and shared a close bond with her sister-in-law Sharryl Harriman Pope. Others who loved her were Harriette Harriman and John Carlson.

Jean was also a cherished grandmother to 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Jean leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and acceptance. She will be dearly missed.
