Carlo DeBartolo passed away peacefully at Atrium Post Acute Care of Chetek on April 11, 2017, at 4:25 a.m.  Carlo was born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 3, 1928.

Carlo married the love of his life, Ruth Magdaline Leyendecker, on May 14, 1949. Their life together was a true love story. When Ruth passed away, Carlo continued to wear her wedding ring on his pinky because he always wanted to “be close to Ruthie.” They had three children: Robert DeBartolo, who passed away at the age of one day old, Virginia (Terrence) Toomey and Cecilia (Terrence) Marc. Carlo was a grandfather to Laura (Brian) Johanson, Katie (Ben) King and David (Cassie) Marc. He was a great-grandfather to Travis and Alyssa Johanson, Allison and Maddie King, and Ephram and Luella Marc.

Carlo always put his family first. He was a true example of what the words “husband,” “daddy” and “grandpa” mean. He was also an animal lover. He loved feeding the birds in his backyard, feeding stray cats and taking in injured animals to mend. Carlo and Ruth loved going out to breakfast together each morning. This became a tradition for them.

Carlo and Ruth are finally together forever. Carlo’s passing is a very sad occurrence for his surviving family, but we are sure that heaven is enjoying Carlo’s vivacious personality. The family will have a private celebration of life in the near future.

Special thanks to the nurses and CNAs at Knapp Haven Nursing Home/Atrium Post Acute Care of Chetek. They took such good care of Carlo and Ruth, for which we could never thank them enough.
